Kudos had a powerful showing last Saturday (10/26) at East Los Angles College, First Quarter Debate Tournament held by SCJFL where nine middle schools participated.

The students showed remarkable determination to successfully complete a 14 and a half hour tournament and rank well doing it.

Nine of Kudos competitors were from the Irvine Public Forum Debate squad. Out of those nine, 4 students placed as part of the top 10 team, while 2 more received top 10 speaker awards.

Andy Chen and Claire Liu earned 4th place team honors with a 5-1 record and going undefeated in the elimination rounds. In their final round, they beat a reigning national champion in impromptu speaking. This was both Andy and Claire’s first tournament.

Sarah Chen and Annie Jiang’s performance earned them the 6th and 7th overall speaker awards.
Joy Sun and Seth Chang finished in the top half of the tournament as the 15th team overall.
Nancy Sun was not eligible for awards because she competed maverick (solo).

Public Forum squad from Temple City campus ride out with 2 teams (Kaitlyn & Suzie; Shirlyn & Madelyn) making it to outrounds with one team (Shirlyn & Madelyn) making it to finals in PF, with one student making it to finals in LD (Julieanne). Joleen Wong was the 8th overall speaking in PF, as well!

On the other hand, in Congress, Kudos students dominated last weekend, with every limited preparation student breaking in an event and most of the congress finalists, including the top Presiding Officer.

Many students were at their first tournament as members of the competition team and were very close to breaking.

14 of the 15 students in congress finals, including champion Bena Feng were from Kudos. First time congress competitors Tiffany Fu, Tim Cai, and Uma Shukla were all 1 point from finaling.

Special Shoutouts to Kerry Zhang who was the #1 seed in prelims, won best Presiding Officer, and took 10th in congress.

Not only speech team members attended this huge tournament, our level 1 and level 2 advanced class students from Temple City, Walnut and Irvine also joined.

With coach Ms. Nancy, Mrs. Myers and Mr. Feldman’s coaching, all our contestants had a great showing and a wonderful day of learning and experiences, below is the list of results.

This tournament also wrapped up this year’s speech training for every team member, we felt tremendously grateful for parents efforts and students’ hard works, it all paid off beautifully~!!

We can’t wait for next year’s training to start again, but until then we can finally take a nice break and enjoy our summer.

See you all in September!

Elementary Speech and Debate tournament

March 2nd, 2019 was the SCJFL Elementary Tournament at Roosevelt Elementary School in San Gabriel, CA. A total of 217 students participated and Kudos had 21 Level II students there that experienced the unforgettable day.

After the drills in class practicing Impromptu Speech and Spontaneous Debate, both tough events especially reserved for Level II students, Kudos participants used this tournament as a chance to solidify their understanding of what they have already learned.

Two students from the Walnut branch got 3rd and 6th place in SPAR debate after advancing many rounds, this news brought great pride and joy to their coach and parents!

Michelle Pan – 3rd Place SPAR
Nathan Chen – 6th place SPAR

After the tournament, many parents said this event helped the students grow and mature beyond the classroom. Students and families may not all bring home a trophy, but they certainly were all grateful for having experienced it.

Stanford University Tournament Feb. 9th-10th, 2019

It was hard work walking in the cold and rain throughout the tournament weekend at Stanford University. But in the record-breaking sized Stanford tournament, Kudos students stood out, met the challenges head-on, and came out a lot wiser than before!

The coaches are very proud of each and every one of the ten Kudos debate team members who competed on the beautiful campus at Stanford. The results are fantastic.

For Public Forum members who were debating against more than two hundred and thirty teams from other schools also went against 10th- and 12th-graders, two teams broke into Triples resulting in the top 48!
For most of the Congress members, this is the first time they combat out of Southern California, all have been fearless, one student broke to finals and ended at 11th, among 115 competitors!

Parents who went with the team came together to help not only their own children but others’, too. In all, a wonderful experience!
